Weekender Briefs: Parents Weekend fun, education for all


Friday 23 Sept

Movies in the Park – shows “Hocus Pocus:” The outdoor film event will be held at 701 E. State St. and will feature the Disney Halloween film Hocus Pocus. The show runs from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Complimentary popcorn, drinks and popsicles will be provided, and there will be family-friendly activities before dark to herald the start of the film.

Participation: Free

“Monty Python and the Holy Grail” to sing along: The Athena Cinema, 20 S. Court St., is hosting a screening of Monty Python and the Holy Grail at Ohio University Parents’ Weekend. The film begins at 7:00 p.m. and everyone in attendance is encouraged to sing along.

Participation: $8

Parents’ weekend starry sky and campfire: Outdoor Pursuits hosts an evening of stargazing and campfires at The Ridges. Participants can roast marshmallows, discover constellations, and listen to late-night stories and lore. The event begins at 8 p.m. and takes place at 100 Ridges Circle.

Saturday 24 Sept

Girls in Aviation Day: The Women in Aviation Chapter of OU is hosting a half-day workshop for girls from preschool through high school who are interested in aviation. The event will be held at 747 Columbia Road in Albany and there will be snacks, crafts and more. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m

Participation: $5

Root oak GNCC: Dirt bike racing resumes in Round 11 of the 2022 GNCC Racing season. The races will be held at 17270 South Wemer Road in Millfield and competitors will be instructed to follow the GNCC red directional arrows instead of their GPS. The gates open at 6am and the race starts at 8am

Entry: $35 for adults racing on Thursdays, $25 for those racing only on weekends, $10 for children, free for children under five

Long Tall Deb and Colin John at Uncle Buck: Singers Long Tall Deb and Colin John will perform a blues-inspired set at Uncle Buck’s Riding Stable and Dance Barn. The event will take place from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and the venue is at 73930 Buck Lane, New Marshfield.

Participation: $5

Sunday 25 September

Parent weekend day hike: Outdoor Pursuits also hosts a day hike for students and their parents in Hocking Hills. The trip starts at 10:00 AM and returns at 3:00 PM. The group meets in Ping and returns there once the trek is complete.

Ohio Soccer vs. Buffalo: The Ohio women’s soccer team plays Buffalo at Chessa Field at 121 S. Shafer St. The team has partnered with Zero Waste for the game, which begins at 1:00 p.m

Participation: Free

Yellow dirt exhibit: The Kennedy Museum of Art is showing the new paintings from John Feodorov’s Yellow Dirt exhibit. The exhibit is a response to the ongoing health and environmental crises on or near the Navajo Reservation of over 500 abandoned uranium mines. The event is from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. and is located at 100 Ridges Circle.
