As No. 6 Tennessee and No. 7 Clemson square off in the 2022 Orange Bowl, the season’s first New Year’s Six game sets up Friday’s bowl game schedule. The Volunteers were heavily seeded for the College Football Playoff in November, but a loss to South Carolina dashed their hopes. The Tigers are back at the top of the ACC thanks to the work of backup quarterback Cade Klubnick, who was named MVP in the ACC Championship game win over North Carolina.

Simply put, this is a great postseason game. Despite the late season struggles, Tennessee still has a lot of hope for the future. In the meantime, Clemson can set the tone for a return to the CFP by giving its youngsters experience on the big stage.

So how will things change inside Hard Rock Stadium on Friday? Let’s break down six New Year’s Eve battles between the Volunteers and Tigers.

Tennessee vs. Clemson: Need to know

Strawberry factor: The Tigers’ freshman quarterback threw for 279 yards, just four completions and a score in a 39-10 win over North Carolina. Two-year starter DJ Uiagalelei, who announced he will transfer to Oregon State, has fans clamoring for the former blue-chip recruit after another disappointing season. Now that Klubnick is established as the starter and coach Dabo Swinney has time to work with him after the regular season, it will be interesting to see how much Swinney gives his 2023 starter.

Josh Heupel’s Rumble: The Volunteers’ second-year coach has orchestrated one of the most impressive turnarounds of the season, but will be without quarterback Hendon Hooker (injury) and star receiver Jalin Hyatt (waiver). However, the hope is that Heupel will be allowed to pass on quarterback Joe Milton to showcase his system to recruits not only in South Florida, but across the country.

Swinney’s achievements: The Tigers’ head coach has won two national championships, but his accomplishments are often overlooked. Including the national title games and the CFP semifinals, Swinney has won 10 of his last 14 postseason appearances, including last season’s Cheez-It Bowl. A veteran coach knows how to prepare his team and, more importantly, keep his team motivated even in games that aren’t part of the playoff rotation.
