Parents’ Weekend is the first of four family weekends hosted by Ohio University. The university hosts a variety of events for families to enjoy together and offers college students time to meet with their parents and show them around campus.
Athens offers plenty of things to do over the weekend, so bring your parents to complete this parents’ weekend bucket list:
View events OU has planned
OU is happy to plan many events to welcome families to campus and there is plenty to do this year. A stargazing and bonfire event will be held at Ridges, a comedy show on Friday Saturday night live Comedian Alex Moffat and a Parents’ Weekend film special at the Athena Cinema.
On Saturday and Sunday when you and your family enjoy the great outdoors, there is a Parents’ Weekend day hike at Conkles Hollow, as well as a volunteer lawn cleaning opportunity to help the elderly population of Athens.
Go to a sporting event
On Saturday, our beloved Bobcats will take on Fordham’s football team at 2pm at Peden Stadium. This game is the annual Turn it Gold game in recognition of National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
The Battle of the Bricks between the OU and Miami volleyball teams will also take place at the Convocation Center on Friday and Saturday. On Friday night, the first 100 fans will receive Bobcats for Ukraine rally towels.
There will also be a football game at Chessa Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. where OU will play Buffalo.
Go out for a nice dinner
Athens has an abundance of amazing restaurants with different cuisines to take your parents to. If you don’t have a car on campus, this is a great time to visit a variety of off-campus restaurants.
For a classic Italian meal, Ciro has a selection of delicious pasta dishes. Other great places to take your parents are Athens Uncorked, Zoe, Restaurant Salaam, Jackie O’s or Cutler’s Restaurant.
Some other places that are a bit further from campus but definitely worth a visit are Shade Winery and Little Fish Brewing Company.
Explore various art exhibitions at the Kennedy Museum of Art
For families who enjoy participating in art together, the Kennedy Museum of Art by the Ridges offers many unique exhibits.
There are exhibits featuring new pieces received by the museum, a Native American art collection, and more.
Spend a day at Hocking Hills or Strouds Run State Park
Late September is one of the best times of the year to spend outside or go hiking. The Athens area has so much natural beauty to offer, especially Hocking Hills State Park or Strouds Run State Park which is a bit closer to campus.
Both parks have many hiking trails of varying difficulty to explore.
Visit the Athens Farmers’ Market
The Athens Farmers’ Market is a great way to support local businesses and show your family what the Athenian community is all about. Each vendor sells a variety of goods, from produce to meats and cheeses. There is no doubt that you will find some of the freshest fruit you have ever eaten at these stalls.
The market takes place every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Show them your favorite spots on campus
Although this is an easier activity, I’m sure your parents will still appreciate it. It can be anything from where you take your classes to your favorite bars you go to with friends.
It can also include your favorite restaurants that you love to go to after a long night (enter Union Street Diner, Larry’s Dawg House and Bagel Street Deli).
With so many great local cafes in Athens, every student will have a favorite to choose from. Take your parents to your favorite diner to get them some caffeine before heading home on Sunday.
