In order to build a thriving real estate business, any real estate agent must make certain sacrifices in the short term in order to be successful in the long term. Sometimes we have to give up certain things to make room for our desired outcomes.

Sacrifice is a word we hate to get into, but it’s vital if we’re to build a business that will last. Below are seven sacrifices any agent must make in order to be successful.

1. Agents must sacrifice their comfort

Growth and comfort cannot coexist. If you want to be successful, you have to be uncomfortable. The activities you fear most are probably the very activities that will lead to business growth.

Do you feel uncomfortable when making phone calls? Make the calls. Does the thought of knocking on the door or calling after the sale by the owners makes your palms sweat? Door knock and call for sale by owner. Does the thought of shooting and publishing video content make you nervous? Record and publish videos.

The business of your dreams is just on the other side of your comfort zone. Feel uncomfortable and watch your business grow.

2. Agents must sacrifice their money

A portion of every check you receive should be reinvested back into your business. The definition of an investment is the placement of money in a business venture for future income or capital appreciation.

If your business is to grow to all it can be, short-term sacrifices must be made in the form of investing money in your business to achieve more profitable results in the future.

Most top producers choose to forego expensive vacations, expensive cars, or status items like watches or handbags during periods when they need to grow their business.

This does not mean that these items should never be purchased. This means that agents who are serious about growing their business will sacrifice certain purchases to increase investment in their business at critical times.

Have you sacrificed money lately by investing in coaching, marketing, or hiring an assistant? If so, your business is primed for future growth.

3. Agents must sacrifice their time

A lot of times we see top producers and think they don’t seem to be working as hard as everyone else. Don’t let their current workload fool you. At some point in their career, almost every top producer has been the hardest working person in their field.

They sacrificed their time to get more results. They worked long hours, weekends and holidays to ensure their business grew quickly.

  • How long has it been since you were the first to enter your office or the last to leave?
  • How long has it been since you made more outbound calls in one day than anyone else in your organization?
  • How long has it been since you called every expired entry that showed up in your MLS for a day?

Time really is money. The more time you invest in your business, the more money you can expect.

4. Agents must sacrifice their ego and pride

Are there any real estate related activities that you feel you are above? Maybe you’ve had great years in the past few years and feel overwhelmed to host an open house. Be careful. Your ego and pride may lead you down a path of destruction.

The basic activities that helped you build your business are often the same activities that will help you survive in a tough market. Instead of stepping away from the activities that originally grew your business, now is the time to turn around and double down on those activities.

Haughtiness comes before the event. Swallow your pride and humble yourself to do whatever it takes to put your business in a position for growth.

5. Agents must sacrifice their passivity

Being passive is not an option in this business. Success doesn’t just happen, and transactions are the result of purposeful actions taken by an agent to add value to a seller or buyer. Do you wait for the deal to happen or do you let it happen?

Passivity is one of the clearest early indicators of failure in real estate sales. The opposite of passivity is activity, and activity is a leading indicator of future success.

Here are some ways you can take action in your business:

When you stop waiting and reacting to everything that happens, the world starts reacting to you. Sacrifice your passivity and the business you desire will appear.

6. Agents have to sacrifice some relationships

We all have relationships with people who hold us back instead of lifting us up. Maybe it’s a friend who loves negativity, or someone who just doesn’t want others to be successful because it reminds them that they’re not willing to do what it takes to become an above-average agent. Is there someone in your life holding you back from being all you can be?

Spend time with agents who have a growth mindset, a desire to serve clients at a higher level, and a clear vision of where they want their business to take them. Surround yourself with people who have the qualities you desire and you will move in that direction.

7. Agents must sacrifice their limiting beliefs

Les Brown once said, “Life has no boundaries except what you make.” What do you think is possible for your business? Your business will never go further than your mind allows you to.

It’s hard to become something if you don’t see it in others first. Who is it that you know or follow on social media that has achieved what you want to achieve? If the answer is nobody, broaden your search and find that person. Study what they did and what they are doing now. Be yourself, but frame your activities after the activities they have done in order to achieve the success you want.

If you want to build the business of your dreams, you must sacrifice your limiting beliefs and expand what you believe is possible.
