The Downloadable Vacation Safety Guide provides valuable tips that can have a positive impact on Americans’ spinal cord health and overall well-being:

  1. Hire a decorating friend. Ask a friend or loved one to help you carry the decorations, and they’ll see you on a ladder to spend the holidays injury-free.

  2. Build a gift wrapping station. Instead of sitting on the floor to pack gifts, set up a station with a supportive chair and keep all your supplies close at hand.

  3. Shop with your spine in mind. Avoid carrying heavy shopping bags and wear supportive shoes if you will be standing or walking for long periods of time. Online shoppers should stay in an ergonomic position while sitting to avoid text neck.

  4. Keep your plate colorful. If you’re enjoying a traditional American feast of mashed potatoes and pies, include bone-healthy options like figs, pomegranates, and dark leafy greens.

  5. Reserve the aisle seat. If you’re traveling by plane, train, or bus, book an aisle seat so it’s easier to get up and stretch your back. Bringing a lumbar support pillow will also help make your journey pain-free.
