Trenton, NJ – “Photo Show Live,” the new lunchtime photo show at the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) James Kerney Campus Gallery (JKCG) at 137 North Broad Street in Trenton, will take place on September 29 from 12 to 1 p.m. This month, Michael Chovan-Dalton, director of JKC Gallery, introduces Wendy Ewald, an artist who has spent more than 40 years working with children, families and teachers around the world. During this session, Ewald and Chovan-Dalton will discuss Ewald’s books The Devil Leaves His Den and Portraits and Dreams and their film Portraits and Dreams, which aired on PBS and will be screened at the JKC Gallery.
Chovan-Dalton noted, “Wendy Ewald will be attending Photo Show Live remotely while I’m at the JKC Gallery. I look forward to discussing the details of her books and the methodology behind making her film. She has an amazing story that has taken her across the US and around the world.”
Ewald’s film, Portraits and Dreams, made its national broadcast and streaming debut in 2020 on the PBS documentary series POV and pov.org. Portraits and Dreams: Photographs and Stories By Children of The Appalachians, now reissued by MACK (UK), was the result of a unique creative collaboration between Ewald and the students they taught at three elementary schools in Letcher County, Kentucky, taught. Tasked with finding authentic ways to portray the lives of these children, she gave each child a camera and then conducted interviews about their childhood in the mountains.
The film looks at the photographs the students created, their work as visionary photographers, and their lives since then.
