Haggerty to replace Speer at helm of OneKey MLS

Nearly three years after OneKey MLS merged to become the state’s largest multiple-listing service, there will be a leadership change.

Richard Haggerty, the current CEO of the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors and President and Chief Strategic Growth Officer of OneKey MLS, will become CEO of OneKey following the retirement of current CEO Jim Speer, who is stepping down at the end of the year.

Both Speer and Haggerty were instrumental in orchestrating the March 2020 merger of Long Island’s multiple listing service and the Hudson Gateway MLS to form OneKey MLS, creating one of the top 10 multiple listing services in the country.

Co-owned by the Long Island Board of Realtors and the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors, OneKey MLS has nearly 45,000 real estate agent and agent subscribers, including nearly 20,000 in Long Island. The merger gave its subscribers access to real estate listings in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties and parts of Brooklyn, as well as Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Sullivan counties and a few points north.

“Building OneKey MLS from scratch with two different MLS systems and then going live right at the start of the pandemic was a bit of a challenge since the real estate industry has been on pause,” Speer said. “That was quite an accomplishment that has changed over time.”

Prior to becoming CEO of OneKey, Speer served as senior vice president of operations for the MLSLI and was the driving force in implementing technology upgrades to provide its members with tools to better engage in the fast move and compete in the changing real estate industry.

According to a statement from OneKey MLS, for the past three years, Speer has been included in the Swanepoel Power 200 list, the definitive ranking of the 200 most powerful and influential residential real estate industry executives nationwide, in addition to other industry awards.

Speer, who began his career at MLSLI in 1985, said the industry has gone through many changes, and recalled how they would print out the new listings every day and deliver them to real estate offices across Long Island before later converting them to a digital format passed over.

“I have met so many great people along the way over the years and found out how many knowledgeable and caring realtors are out there whose main goal is to bring buyers and sellers together and make them all happy and find them a place to live ‘ said Spear.

Haggerty, who lives in Manhattan, has worked with the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors for more than 30 years. He had been looking for a job in the publishing industry when he became a contract clerk with the former Westchester County Board of Realtors and was later offered a position with the organization.

After several mergers of other real estate associations, the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors grew to more than 13,000 members, and Haggerty eventually rose through the ranks to lead the group.

Haggerty said that inaccurate data is “the number one source of financial and time strains for real estate professionals” and that OneKey MLS strives to provide accurate, real-time data to its members.

“We need to embrace change and figure out how to make it work for all of us, recognizing that it will enable us to provide a better level of service to the consumer,” Haggerty said in an interview last year. “If we can’t drive change for the benefit of our members, then we need to get into another business.”

Linda Lugo, Chair of the Board of OneKey MLS, announced the leadership change in a video sent to members this week.

“We want to thank Jim for his tireless efforts in helping us build and accomplish so much in such a short time and especially during a global pandemic,” said Lugo. “The Board believes that Richard, a seasoned industry leader who pioneered the idea of forming a new regional MLS through the merger of HGMLS and MLSLI, was the strongest candidate for this position. His unwavering commitment to the success of this organization and his appreciation of the important role MLS plays in the real estate space put him at the top of the list.”

Haggerty will assume the role of CEO of OneKey MLS on January 1st.
