DJI Osmo Mobile 6 Pushes Smartphone Photography Performance

DJI, a leading civilian drone and camera technology company based in China, launched the Osmo Mobile 6 on September 22nd, a palm-sized, wearable device that unleashes the full potential of everyday smartphone photos and videos.

This latest addition to the popular Osmo Mobile series features a smartphone stabilizer enhanced with on-device features, software features and editing software to give users complete control over the phone cameras they carry. In addition to improved ergonomics and compatibility with larger phones, the Osmo Mobile 6 features DJI’s 3-axis stabilization, an all-new Quick Launch, and ActiveTrack 5.0.

Three powerful motors and DJI’s advanced algorithms keep smartphones steady while taking photos and videos. The electronic image stabilization of smartphones can falter or lose video quality during more dynamic movements and dimly lit environments, but the Osmo Mobile 6’s motorized stabilization makes all the difference in every moment.

A new Quick Launch feature has been provided for iPhone users. Once unfolded, attaching an iPhone to the stabilizer will automatically trigger the Mimo app alarm to instantly enter the camera view. Preparation time is drastically reduced as the device is up and running three times faster than previous models.

Featuring an upgraded version of DJI’s ActiveTrack, Osmo Mobile 6’s ActiveTrack 5.0 provides more stable tracking at longer distances and also allows the front camera to track subjects that turn or twist sideways.

DJI’s own Mimo app and the officially recommended app LightCut are both available to guide users in content creation. The Osmo Mobile 6 has a 1,000 mAh battery with a lifespan of around 6 hours and 24 minutes and a charging time of around 1 hour and 24 minutes.

DJI Osmo Mobile 6 retails for $159 and includes a magnetic clamp, tripod, power cord, and storage pouch. It is available now on DJI’s official platform and will be available through other channels at a later date.

Founded in 2006, DJI has been on the upswing since the drone market exploded in 2013. DJI has received eight different rounds of funding since its inception, according to commercial data platform Tianyancha. However, almost four and a half years after DJI raised $1 billion in strategic funding in April 2018, DJI has not announced any further progress. On August 21, 2020, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) made its final decision on an investigation against DJI. An injunction was issued but enforcement was suspended.

As early as 2016, DJI predicted an upper limit for drones. DJI founder Frank Wang also said in 2016 that the drone market will be close to saturation, and DJI’s revenue will reach 20 billion yuan (US$2.82 billion) to reach the peak. In recent years, DJI has explored additional areas in response to slowing growth in the consumer drone market. In addition to industrial UAVs, DJI has also launched smart hardware products such as motion cameras, recording accessories, and smart driving products.
