Cirkus Opening Day Box Office: Ranveer Singh & Rohit Shetty film sells 3 lakh tickets; Collects Rs 6.25 crore

The Rohit Shetty comedy, Circus, in front of Ranveer Singh has been off to a slow start at the Indian box office. The comedy of errors saw low occupancy at the theaters throughout the day as estimates put the first day collection at Rs 6.25 to 6.50 crore. Cirkus opened with over 10,000 performances on its opening day and saw a low occupancy of 12 percent during the day, which is much lower than expected. A film of this scale was expected to start with 15 crore, but there are times when big films fall short of expectations. This is one of them.

Cirkus starts low

The three national chains – PVR, Inox & Cinepolis – have collected around Rs 3.20 crore, contributing approx. 50 percent of the total business. While PVR scored a net total of 1.50 crore, the other two chains, Inox & Cinepolis, have collected approx. Rs 1.70 crore. The biggest surprise came from the Gujarat zone, as the numbers from this zone were shocking as Rohit Shetty’s films usually do well in Gujarat, and the market is also known to score big for comedy films. The Mumbai circuit has also been a big disappointment for this Rohit Shetty film as most of the audience in this zone come out for Avatar: The Way of Water on the big screen.

The film needs to see huge jumps on Saturday and Sunday to somehow salvage the script after such a low start, and the trail ahead looks a little tough given the opening and word of mouth.

The pricing was at a blockbuster level, and as a result, returns are even lower than the numbers indicate. The film released during the festive week of Christmas and it remains to be seen if it can reap any holiday benefits through its release or not. During the year, the lucrative festive season of Eid, Independence Day and Diwali has been disastrous for Hindi films and the opening of Cirku also shows a dull Christmas. The dull start also shows that the trailer of Cirkus didn’t generate any kind of excitement among the audience as a Rohit Shetty comedy with Ranveer Singh and the entire ensemble surely warrants a much bigger start on face value alone.

Will Cirkus show an upward trend on Saturday and Sunday?

While the fate won’t change from here on out, the jump in numbers on Saturday and Sunday, followed by a Monday equal to Friday, may give Cirkus a chance to record some savings numbers, though that seems unlikely as on-site reporting on content is not up to scratch. The film has sold around 3 lakh tickets on its opening day across the country. Cirkus turns out to be one of those rare Rohit Shetty failures, and it also gave all those who have been hiding in closets for the last 15 years waiting for the man to fail to come out and vent their thoughts. But he is sure to bounce back stronger with Singham Again. The greatest of directors have seen failure in their career and it is always an integral part of every director’s journey.

As for Ranveer Singh, the actor is all set to be seen next in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, directed by Karan Johar, which pairs him alongside Alia Bhatt. The film moves in a formidable ensemble cast of Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi among others. As for Singham Again, the film is slated to hit theaters in April with a multi-location start-to-finish schedule. It is helmed by Ajay Devgn, and as Rohit Shetty had previously informed, will also star Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in pivotal roles.

As far as the second day of Cirku is concerned, the film is seeing a nominal jump at the box office in the morning shows and it is the trend towards noon and evening that will tell us where the film will go on its second day.
