Democratic gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist joined State Sen. Annette Taddeo and a handful of Hispanic community leaders on Wednesday to discuss governor. Ron DeSantis’ Get 50 undocumented immigrants to fly out of Texas Martha’s Vineyard.
Crist slammed the governor over the controversial flights, calling the action a “disgusting political stunt.”
“Ron – you traded these people. you lied to her They spent our tax dollars flying them across the country,” Crist said. “Well, because of you, Floridians hold the bag for your games. There is no evidence that these refugees ever attempted to get to Florida. So Ron had to get her to participate in this political stunt.”
The Venezuelan migrants who were asylum seekers were lured onto the Florida-funded charter flights the promise of job opportunities and a better life. They were then flown to Martha’s Vineyard from San Antonio, Texas with no shelter or resources on arrival.
Crist said the political stunt helped serve as a distraction new anti-abortion laws introduced by Republicans in the US Senate.
“He has spent the last few months avoiding speaking about his ban. So he decided to change the subject instead. He didn’t care that Florida taxpayers and refugees fleeing socialist dictatorships will pay the price,” Crist said.
Taddeo, who fled Colombia when she was 17 after terrorists kidnapped her father, called the GOP’s support for DeSantis’ actions hypocritical and cited the government’s recent movement against communism.
“Look, politicians in Miami, where I represent the Senate, love to stand up and talk about communism,” she said. “If it wasn’t obvious before that they’re taking the pain and suffering of our communities into their own game, it’s quite obvious now.”
Goodbye Ferrothe executive director of the Venezuelan-American caucus, joined Taddeo.
“Today, Governor Ron DeSantis continues his inhumane and cruel political show at the expense of the despair and suffering of Venezuelan immigrants,” she said. “We don’t know when he will put more immigrants on a plane. We don’t know how much more taxpayer money he will spend on his political stance. He doesn’t care about our demand that he stop abusing people for his personal gain.”
“Denouncing Maduro’s criminal and cruel dictatorship and despising the immigrants who are desperately escaping that dictatorship is hypocritical and manipulative, to say the least,” she continued.
Ferro also criticized the financial burden the flights are putting on Florida taxpayers. The flights cost the state at least $615,000, Allocated part of $12 million in the budget for “relocation of migrants”.
“We want to remind Governor Ron DeSantis that all asylum seekers must be treated with dignity and respect and not as pawns in his cruel and horrific political games,” she said.
