2023 Call for Editors for Perspectives on Politics


The American Political Science Association (APSA) invites applications and nominations for the editorial board of perspectives on politics. One of the Association’s three flagship journals, now in its 20th year of publication, receiving over 500 article submissions and 350 book reviews per year.

The Editorship serves a four-year term, with the possibility of a two-year extension with the approval of the APSA Council. The new editorial team will start on June 1, 2023. APSA is open to editorial proposals that involve innovative individual and institutional collaborations, including diverse international teams at a single institution or multiple institutions.

APSA supports the editorial board and the journal in a variety of ways, including:

  • Granting a dedicated senior editor based at APSA;
  • providing access to Editorial Manager’s manuscript submission and peer review system;
  • maintaining editing and electronic production services;
  • hosting an annual Editorial Board meeting during the APSA Annual Meeting; and
  • Reporting on bibliometrics (citations, downloads, altmetric, etc.) to inform decision making.

The main responsibilities of the new editor or editorial team include:

  • maintaining the quality, content and editorial management of the journal;
  • overseeing the peer review, acceptance and rejection of submissions;
  • Determining the content of each issue and publication of FirstView Articles;
  • development of special editions and symposiums;
  • managing the book review process;
  • Conducting the annual meeting of the Editorial Board and maintaining relationships with the members of the Editorial Board; and
  • Timely execution of all tasks according to best practices and COPE guidelines

Applications for editorial staff require at least:

  1. Proposal explaining your reasons and plans for editing the magazine, including any planned innovations, expansions and strategies for different content types;
  2. Curriculum vitae of all editorial staff;
  3. A budget that includes your institution’s financial support and the amount requested from APSA. This budget should include expectations for such costs as course tuition, postgraduate support, and/or honoraria; and
  4. Letter of institutional support.

Your proposal will be evaluated by the Editor Search Committee appointed by the APSA Council. The selection criteria include:

  1. Vision for the future of the journal under your editorship, including any planned innovations, expansions and strategies for different content types. APSA is currently considering other publishing innovations such as preprint repositories, active citation/annotation, data repositories and open access.
  2. Vision for an overall strategy for the journal to ensure a diverse and inclusive approach to submissions, authorship, methods and subject representation. If appropriate, add specific examples from your past experience of promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.
  3. Proposed editorial process and how you would conduct peer reviews and solicit or administer the book review process, symposiums and special editions.
  4. Plan to recruit, nurture, and expand a strong and diverse reviewer pool for both articles and books.
  5. An overview of previous journal or editorial experience.
  6. Financial Requirements.

The Editor Search Committee will forward its recommendation to the APSA Council. If approved, the Council will notify all applicants of its decision and work with the new editorial team to take over leadership of the journal on June 1, 2023.
